Blackmore third grade student Natalie Walker has been selected as one of the Youth Art Month (YAM) featured artists for her oil painting of Max the dog. Her art will be featured on March 14.
Each day of March, a different student will be featured on the KAEA (Kansas Art Education Association) and Kansas Art Teachers Facebook pages. One student from every elementary, middle, and high school in Kansas could enter the state art competition, but only 31 were selected to be featured during Youth Art Month. All the art that was entered into the state contest will be judged at a later time.
Walker created her oil painting when local artist and alumni Jim Clements visited the school to teach a painting workshop. She completed the entire piece of artwork on her own.
"This is a huge honor, especially considering this is between all the elementary,
middle, and high school art that was entered in the contest!" Elementary Art Teacher Ira Bane said.
Walker's art can be viewed at the Kansas Youth Art Month exhibition on display at Topeka Shawnee County Public Library through March 23, 2024. Visit the library's atrium to view artwork from K-12 students across Kansas. Also visit the KAEA website at any time to see pictures and videos of most of the art, including Walker's.
