USD 490 Summer Programs
K-5 Summer Program (Explore 490)
All students currently enrolled in USD 490 schools participate in a variety of hands-on, project-based courses which integrate math and reading standards using research-based interventions. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to each student and shuttle transportation is provided.
A registration fee of $40 must be prepaid prior to the first day of classes. Fees for students in grades K-5 who qualify for free or reduced meals are waived. Grade K-5 students identified as at risk in reading and/or math will be invited to attend and admitted tuition-free. Space is limited depending on staff availability.
A director serves on-site. Classes will be held June 3-27, 2024, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Grandview Elementary School.

Course Completion and Credit Recovery (Grades 6-12)
USD 490 6th – 12th grade students identified as eligible for course completion and/or credit recovery are offered the opportunity to meet these requirements through completion of online virtual instruction.
Fee for course completion credit recovery is $150, prepaid. There is no additional charge for multiple courses. Credit recovery and course completion are not eligible for free or reduced fees.
Parents are informed of tentative eligibility following Spring Break. Following a required orientation on June 3 from 8 – 11 a.m., courses are provided in an independent lab setting which is open to students June 3-27, 2024, Monday through Thursday, 8 – 11 a.m. at El Dorado High School.
Credit Acquisition (Grades 9-11)
USD 490 9th – 11th grade students who cannot fit a required course or a course related to their Individual Plans of Study during the regular school day, may elect to take a maximum of two courses during the summer school program. Courses will be completed through online virtual instruction; available course selection is limited. All other guidelines (fees, eligibility, structure) are the same for enrichment courses as course completion/credit recovery courses.
Athletic Programs (Grades 7-12)
All students in grades 7-12 who plan to participate in any athletic season during the 2024-2025 school year should plan to attend Summer strength/conditioning and open gym sessions. This district wide schedule will be shared in the month of April. Strength/Conditioning sessions will be supervised by the Major Sports Coordinator and/or Weights Coordinator. Open gym sessions will be supervised appropriately.
Driver's Education (Grades 8-12)
Drivers Education is available to USD 490 students who are age eligible by Kansas Law and to out-of-district students if space is available. The class is filled by age prioritization to those who apply and pay fees prior to March 25th for virtual classes and May 6th for summer coursework onsite. The course requires two components: coursework and driving.
Two opportunities for the classroom component will be offered. The first, a virtual course, will be conducted April 6 – May 24, 2024, with on-site, supervised tests. Enrollment in the virtual course will be limited to 30. The second, onsite option, will be conducted from 8:30-11 a.m. or 12-2:30 p.m., June 3-27, 2024, Monday through Thursday, also at EHS. Pupil teacher ratio for the onsite classroom component is 1:25.
The driving portion of the course will be conducted June 3 – July 30, 2024, and is by appointment, scheduled through the instructor. Pupil teacher ratio for driving is 1:3. USD 490 student fee for both components, combined, is $75, prepaid, with no reductions for lunch status. Out-of-district students may enroll if space is available for a fee of $350, also prepaid and not subject to income reductions.

Transportation (All Grades)
The El Dorado Public Schools will provide a free shuttle bus for all USD 490 students participating in El Dorado academic summer programs. Shuttle stops will be at each district attendance center and coordinated by the program directors and USD 490 Transportation.
