Ogg's class

Skelly Elementary students are spreading kindness in a delicious way! As part of the school-wide Kindness BINGO challenge, Mrs. O’Brien-Ogg’s second-grade class chose to complete a “Choice Project” square. The students voted to “make food for people who don’t have enough,” and on Feb. 21, they worked together to prepare a homemade meal.

"I'm super excited to do this and very proud of the heart my students have," said O’Brien-Ogg.

With the help of parent volunteers and donated ingredients, the students made beef soup, fresh bread, and no-bake cookies. Their efforts resulted in enough food to serve more than 15 people in need. After school, Mrs. O’Brien-Ogg plans to deliver the meal to the local homeless shelter.

Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) President Ravin Young was one of the parent volunteers who helped with the cooking and she was impressed by their hard work.

“They blew me away with some of their skills,” Young said.

The project was not simply cooking—it was also a learning experience. Students explored the origins of food ingredients, followed a recipe for the no-bake cookies, and completed a recipe-related word scramble. They also wrote reflections on what they like and do not like in soup and shared something new they learned. During snack time, the students were able to taste the soup they made.

Skelly’s Kindness BINGO is an activity that supports the district’s Character Strong program, which focuses on teaching positive values. This month’s word, “kindness,” was truly brought to life through this activity and the various ways classrooms demonstrated kindness to complete the BINGO card.
